Enjoy these Savory Mini Apple Turkey Burgers for lunch or dinner. They are easy to make and have a lot of flavor.
Take your time caramelizing the onions in this recipe. It IS key. Make sure they are nice and golden brown. The onions add a bit of sweetness to these turkey burgers.
The apples are not necessary but they add a nice flavor to the burgers. I used a vegetable peeler to create thin slices of apple, but you could also use a cheese grater.
I purposely made these burgers smaller since your stomach is smaller after bariatric surgery. Each patty is 1.5 oz but if you can handle larger portions of meat then feel free to make these turkey burgers larger.
These can easily be eaten as a snack too. If you are just having them as a snack then I would suggest just having one.
If you are meal prepping them ahead of time then pack the lettuce in a baggie on the side. These also freeze well.

Pureed:

- Omit apple and lettuce. Cooked onions will likely be tolerated but please check your surgeon’s guidelines.

Savory Apple Turkey Burger

Ingredients
For caramelized onion:
- 1/2 tsp extra virgin olive
- 1/2 onion, peeled and thinly sliced
For burgers:
- 1/2 apple (divided)
- 1/2 lb lean ground turkey meat
- 1/2 teaspoon dijon mustard
- 1/8 teaspoon sage
- 1/8 teaspoon thyme
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- Dash black pepper
For toppings:
- 1 oz Brie (optional)
- 4 lettuce leaves
Instructions
- Preheat grill.
- Heat olive oil in a small frying pan over medium heat. Once heated, add onion and saute for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown and sweet.
- While onion is cooking, shred apple with a peeler or cheese grater so you have fine, thin slices of apple.
- Mix together burger ingredients: turkey meat, djon, sage, thyme, salt, pepper and 1/2 of the apple. Save the rest of the apple for toppings. Form meat into patties (about 4, 1.5 oz each)
- Grill burgers on the grill for about 5-8 minutes each side or until internal temperature is 165 F. Remove burgers from grill.
- Place burgers on top of lettuce. Then top burgers with remaining apple, onions and Brie. Wrap lettuce around burger like a bun. Yum.
