This High Protein Chocolate Banana Chia Seed Pudding is the perfect snack to have on hand after bariatric surgery. And did I mention it’s delicious?
Constipation is a common complaint after bariatric surgery. Chia seed pudding may just do the trick to help get things moving along. Chia seeds are high in both, insoluble and soluble fiber. Plus they have anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids, so that’s an extra bonus.
As a side note, NEVER, eat a spoonful of chia seeds without soaking them first. They will expand in your stomach and I suspect would be painful. Most recommendations state to at least soak them for 10 minutes but if you have had bariatric surgery, then I would suggest 8 hrs just to be safe.
I used chocolate protein powder to help boost the protein content and give it that “chocolately” flavor. I felt a small piece of banana was in order to improve the flavor, but you can leave it out if you like.
In the instructions I listed that you could use any kind of milk that you like or that your surgeon recommends. Conventional milk will add additional carbs but it will also add more protein. I used almond milk when I prepared this version.
I suggest making a batch of this recipe and then portion it out into small mason jars or tupperware as an easy snack throughout the week.
Unfortunately, this snack is not appropriate for the pureed phase. If you are in the soft diet phase you may or may not be able to eat this recipe. Check with your surgeon’s guidelines first.
